Marta
Carretero is Senior Lecturer in English Language
and Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid, where she currently
teaches subjects within the areas of pragmatics and applied linguistics, as well
as optional subjects and doctoral courses on English tense, aspect and modality.
She has done extensive research on modality, including English-Spanish
contrastive analysis, the influence of genre on modality and the use of modal
expressions in written English by Spanish-speaking learners of English, among
other issues. Within this area she authors articles and reviews which have
appeared in international publications, such as Multilingua and Functions
of Language, and in a number of Spanish journals. She has also contributions
in collective works, such as English Modality in Perspective: Genre Analysis
and Contrastive Studies (2004) and Perspectives on evidentiality and
modality (2004). She has taken part in a project on topic management,
directed by Angela Downing, and another on modality and EFL, of which she was
the principal researcher. She has been assistant editor of Estudios ingleses
de la Universidad Complutense since 1997, and is co-editor of the collective
work Estudios de lingüística aplicada a la comunicación (2004).
