Focus and Scope

Atlantis is the journal of the Spanish Association of English Studies, AEDEAN (Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos). Since 1979 it has been publishing peer-reviewed scholarly work in the area of English, covering a broad range of linguistic, literary and cultural topics.

The Journal has a decidedly interdisciplinary and international outlook and encourages contributions from across the world. It is open to the multiplicity of cultural, theoretical and methodological perspectives which characterise the contemporary field of English Studies, while also fully committed to offering readers only scholarship of the highest quality. All proposals are strictly double-blind peer-reviewed by experts.

Atlantis is published punctually twice a year, in June and December, and includes articles, reviews and interviews. The journal is widely indexed and disseminated through international platforms, therefore offering authors full visibility for their work.

Section Policies

Articles published by Atlantis must be the result of research. They should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words and, ideally, would have the following sections, although these need not be explicitly indicated in the text:

1. An introduction providing the context of the research and formulating the research question to be substantiated.

2. A brief review of the relevant bibliography, justifying the validity, originality, and scientific interest of the hypothesis or research claim in the light of existing scholarship on the subject.

3. The body of the article, in which evidence and facts prove the hypothesis or substantiate the research claim.

4. A concluding section, in which the contribution made to scholarship is neatly delimited and emphasized.

It is highly desirable for articles to have a sharp, clearly-stated focus, with aims made explicit from the outset and every section contributing to show the validity of the research and of its conclusions.

Aside from offering an accurate description of the contents of the book, a book review should be a reasoned attempt at assessing its relative value and scope with reference to similar works in the field. It should therefore include a bibliographical revision of previous publications, a critical assessment of the debates involved and the book’s contribution to these. Objectivity on the part of the reviewer is essential. Formal aspects such as style, layout, critical apparatus, reference system, etc. should also be attended to.

Reviews will be considered for publication only if the book under review has appeared within one year of the date of submission. Book reviews should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words. Unsolicited book reviews will not normally be considered for publication, unless the book under review is an outstanding, international landmark in the field.

An interview should contribute to revealing information hitherto unknown about the interviewee's work and relevant circumstances. Its method of approach should be carefully planned and successfully applied, avoiding hackneyed prompts or rambling discourse.

Referees will also consider whether (a) the interviewee's personality is sufficiently relevant to the field of Anglo-American studies; (b) the interviewer shows sufficient knowledge to conduct a competent and searching interview; (c) the structure and the contents of the interview contribute to producing originality and relevance.
